There is a lot of alarming material online about the diseases household pests carry. Some of it is accurate, quite a lot is exaggerated, and the exaggeration is unhelpful — it makes people either panic or dismiss the whole subject.
So here is a straighter version. In an Australian home, most pest-related illness comes from two mechanisms: mechanical contamination of food and surfaces, and allergen exposure. Direct transmission of serious disease by a household insect is comparatively rare here.
Mechanical contamination: the main event
Cockroaches and flies do not inject anything into you. They walk through drains, waste, faeces and decaying material, then walk across your chopping board — and in the case of flies, regurgitate and defecate while feeding. That is enough to move organisms such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli onto food.
The resulting illness is ordinary gastroenteritis, which is unpleasant for most people and genuinely dangerous for the very young, the very old and anyone immunocompromised. This is the most common real-world health consequence of a pest problem in a home or food business, and it is entirely preventable by keeping pests off food surfaces.
Allergens and asthma: the most underrated risk
This is the one people know least about and it affects the most households.
- Cockroach allergens in droppings, shed skins and body fragments are a well-documented trigger for asthma and allergic sensitisation, with the strongest evidence in children.
- Rodent urine, droppings and dander act the same way, and a roof-void population can put allergen into the air you breathe indoors.
- Dust mites are not really a pest-control target, but they are the biggest indoor allergen in most Australian homes. They thrive in humidity above roughly half, which is why ventilation and moisture control matter.
Rodent-associated infections
Rats and mice are associated with a genuine but modest list of infections, including salmonellosis, leptospirosis (spread through urine-contaminated water) and rat-bite fever. Risk rises with heavy infestations, contaminated food, and any handling of dead rodents or nesting material without gloves and respiratory protection.
The practical advice is simple: never sweep or vacuum dry rodent droppings, which aerosolises the material. Dampen the area first, wear gloves and a mask, and bag the waste.
Biting and stinging: injury more than infection
- Bed bugs are not known to transmit any disease to humans. The harm they cause is itching, secondary infection from scratching, sleep deprivation and real psychological distress.
- Fleas mostly cause irritation and flea allergy dermatitis in pets, and can transmit tapeworm to a cat or dog that swallows an infected flea.
- Redback spiders and European wasps cause envenomation and, in a minority of people, dangerous allergic reactions. That is an acute injury risk rather than a disease risk, but it is the most immediately serious item on this page.
Mosquitoes: the exception worth naming
Mosquitoes are the one group in Australia that genuinely transmits disease at scale. Ross River virus occurs in South Australia and causes joint pain and fatigue that can persist for months. Mosquito-borne viruses are monitored by health authorities, and the advice is unglamorous but effective: empty anything holding water around the property — pot plant saucers, blocked gutters, buckets, unused pet bowls, boats and trailers — since backyard containers breed the mosquitoes most likely to bite you.
What this means practically
You do not need to worry about exotic diseases. You do need to keep pests off food surfaces, control moisture, and take allergen exposure seriously if anyone in the house has asthma. Those three things address the overwhelming majority of the real risk.
